GREENVILLE, Pa. (March 20) – The Waynesburg University baseball team hung right with 23rd-ranked Thiel through four innings on Friday afternoon as the two teams opened up Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play.
Unfortunately, the Tomcat offense found its groove in the fifth inning with a three-spot and they went on from there to win 6-1.
The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 5-7 on the season, while the Tomcats improved to 9-3 on the season.
The game began as a pitchers' duel between Waynesburg's Tim Knight and Thiel's Josh Tedesco. After giving up a run in the first, Knight settled down and blanked the powerful Thiel bats through the next three innings.
The Jackets tied the game up in the top of the fourth when third baseman Pat Logan led off belted his second homer of the season. But, the Tomcats finally got to Knight in the fifth when they pushed three runs across the plate on just three singles and some good small ball to take a 4-1 lead.
Thiel sealed the deal with two runs in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead and go on to victory.
The Waynesburg bats simply couldn't figure out Tedesco, as he was able to spread out seven hits over nine innings of a complete-game victory. He walked two and struck out four.
Knight worked six innings of the contest, and five of the six runs he gave up were earned on 10 hits and two walks. Knight also struck out three Thiel batters.
After Knight's day ended, first-year hurler Ryan Schell came in and put together a sterling performance as he worked two perfect innings with a strikeout.
Speaking of first-year Waynesburg players, two of them, freshman catcher Brendan Scioscia and sophomore Anthony Defilippo, led the team at the plate. They both went two-for-four with a double.
The Jackets won't have to wait long to try and get revenge on the Cats as the two teams will lock up in a double-header tomorrow. The games will be considered home contests for the Jackets, but it will be held at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W.Va.
