MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 21) – The Waynesburg University baseball team dropped a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games against 23rd-ranked Thiel College on Saturday night at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W.Va.
The Yellow Jackets lost game one by the final of 5-4, and dropped game two 12-3.
In the opener, the Jackets (5-9, 0-3) trailed just 3-2 going into the top of the sixth. The Tomcats (11-3, 3-0) were able to bring home a pair of runs to grab a 5-2 lead. Waynesburg answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth and one more in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't complete the comeback.
All-American second baseman Wes White Jr went two-for-four at the plate with a triple, two runs scored and a RBI to pace the Jacket offense. Freshman third baseman Corey Goeggelman drove in a pair of runs while going one-for-three at the dish.
Both teams saw their starting pitchers work all seven innings of the contest. The Jackets' Patrick Logan gave up five earned runs on seven hits and two walks. He also racked up seven strikeouts for the game.
Thiel's Dave Diyorio got the win for Thiel after giving up three earned runs on six hits and a walk.
In game two, the two teams were locked in a 3-3 contest after four innings. However, the potent Tomcat offense exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-3 lead. Thiel went on to add three more runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
For the third-straight game, Thiel got a complete-game win from their starting pitcher as Cory Borland went all seven, gave up three earned runs on seven hits and four walks.
Four different Waynesburg pitchers worked the night cap of the twin-bill. Freshman Chris Dittmar took the loss after worker four innings as the team's starter. He gave up eight runs, six of which were earned, on nine hits and a walk.
Waynesburg returns to action on Tuesday, March 24, when they host PAC rival Westminster. The double-header will be held at Mylan Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
