MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 24) – The Waynesburg University baseball team picked up their first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victories of 2009 as they swept a doubleheader with Westminster on Tuesday afternoon at Mylan Park in Morgantown.

The Yellow Jackets (7-9, 2-3) opened up with a 12-6 win over the Titans (5-12, 2-3) in game one, and followed that with a hard-fought 4-3 triumph in game two.

During the opener, Waynesburg scored all the runs they needed when they dropped an eight spot on their opponents in the bottom of the first to take an 8-0 lead. Junior All-American second baseman Wes White Jr was a big part of the offense in that opening frame as he reached base on a walk his first time up, came around to score and followed that with a three-run double before scoring once again.

The Jackets made it 11-0 after two innings and added their 12th-and-final run in the bottom of the third.

Junior hurler Zac Rhoades (3-1) got the win on the mound after working five innings in which he gave up six runs on 11 hits and three walks. He also recorded three strikeouts on the day. Junior hurler Bryan Leones relieved Rhoades in the sixth and worked two innings of scoreless ball.

Centerfielder Rob Cool Jr led the Jackets at the plate by going four-for-four with two runs scored an RBI. White ended up with three runs scored and three RBI.

Game two was much more of a back-and-forth affair as Westminster took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Waynesburg responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

After scoring a run in the top of the fourth and the top of the fifth, the Titans held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the inning. However, the Jackets showed good resiliency as they took the lead for good.

In the bottom of the inning, White walked to lead off the inning and was bunted into scoring position by designated hitter Corey Goeggelman. Shortstop Anthony Defilippo followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3.

After a fly out put two outs on the board, Cool got the hit of the day as he singled Defilippo in from second to put the Jackets up for good.

Waynesburg got another excellent effort from their bullpen in game two. After sophomore Jesse Gonzalez worked the first four innings in which he gave up all three runs, two of which were earned, on just four hits and two walks, he was relieved by sophomore Pat Ehrin.

Ehrin (2-0) worked one inning of scoreless ball and had two strikeouts en route to picking up the win. Junior Ryan Schell worked a pair of scoreless innings for the save (1). Over the sixth and seventh frames, he allowed just a walk and struck out two.

Cool added two more hits to his day, going two-for-two in game two, with a run scored and two RBI. Freshman catcher Brendan Scioscia recorded a hit in each of Waynesburg's wins to run his current hitting streak to seven games.

Waynesburg will try to keep their winning ways going on Friday, when they travel to Grove City for a double-header against the PAC-rival Wolverines.
