GROVE CITY (March 27) – The Waynesburg University baseball team split a pair of games on Friday at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City.
Waynesburg couldn't hold a late lead and dropped game one 4-3. They came back with a seventh-inning game-winner in game two to take the contest 8-7.
In the opener, the Jackets held a 2-0 lead through five innings thanks to a stellar starting pitching effort from Patrick Logan and RBIs from shortstop Anthony Deflippo and designated hitter Bill Hanning.
Grove City bounced back to tie the game 2-2 after six innings, but the Jackets responded with a run in the top of the seventh off an RBI single by right fielder Andrew Spargur. Unfortunately, the Jackets couldn't hold the lead in the bottom of the frame as Wolverine third baseman Mark Scriven connected on a walk-off two-run single to snatch the victory.
Game two started out in the same fashion as the opener, with Waynesburg taking a 7-2 lead in the top of the sixth. However, GCC exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the contest.
The Jackets were able to push the game-winning run across in the top of the seventh when freshman Brendan Scioscia came around to score on a GCC error. Relief pitcher Steve Ferimer tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to get the win.
Junior second baseman Wes White Jr had a huge game offensively in the second contest of the day, going three-for-three at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI. He reached base a fourth time on a walk. With a hit in each game, Scioscia extended his team-leading hitting streak to nine games.
The same two teams will be back in action on Saturday when Waynesburg hosts Grove City in a nine-inning showdown at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W.Va.
