Men's tennis gets first PAC win of the season

Yellow Jackets drop Titans 6-3 in New Wilmington

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (March 28) – The Waynesburg men's tennis team won its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match of the season on Saturday when they downed Westminster 6-3.

 

The victory improves the Yellow Jackets' record to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action. The Titans dropped to 0-2 in conference play and 1-7 on the season.

 

The Jackets got the day off to a winning start when senior Kevin Houseknecht and junior Jeff Canning teamed up to earn a hard-fought 9-7 victory over Stefan Hadricky and Fred Romeo at first doubles.

 

Adam Woodruff and Dustin Cozad added a second win in doubles competition at the number-three slot when they downed Drew Trifelos and Mike Codita by the final of 8-2.

 

Leading 2-1 going into singles play, Houseknecht added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hadricky at first singles. Canning followed by downing Romeo at number-two singles by downing Romeo 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

 

After the Titans closed the gap on the Jackets with wins at third and fourth singles, Waynesburg sealed the victory thanks to Woodruff and Cozad picking up triumphs at number-five and number-six singles, respectively.

 

Waynesburg will try to take down another conference foe on Tuesday, March 31 when they host Bethany. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
