WASHINGTON, Pa. (Apr. 13) – The Waynesburg baseball team out-slugged Pitt-Greensburg to the tune of a 16-8 victory on Monday in a non-conference game at Consol Energy Park in Washington.
The win improves Waynesburg's record to 14-12 on the season, while Pitt-Greensburg dropped fell to 13-13. The game also served as an opportunity for both teams to honor any servicemen or women who were in the crowd. Along with reading off the names of service personnel in attendance, the two squads raffled off several special edition jerseys that were worn during the game.
The hitting started immediately for the Yellow Jackets, who were the visiting team. With two runners on and an out on the board, sophomore shortstop Anthony Defilippo drilled a two-run double to put Waynesburg ahead 2-0.
After UPG trimmed the lead to 2-1 following the second inning, Waynesburg upped their advantage to 4-1 in the third when first baseman Brandon Dittmar and designated hitter Bill Hanning singled in a run a piece.
After the Bobcats scored a run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 4-2, Waynesburg scored two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI triple by second baseman Wes White Jr and an RBI bunt single by third baseman Corey Goeggelman.
The Jackets made it 8-2 in the top of the fifth after Hanning and right fielder Andrew Spargur drove in runs. Greensburg made it 8-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Jackets regained a six-run lead (9-3) with a score in the top of the sixth.
The Bobcats brought the game back into reach with a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit down to 9-6.
However, Waynesburg put the contest out of reach with a run in the top of the seventh and a six-spot in the top of the eighth, bringing up the score of 16-6. Greensburg picked up two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but didn't get any closer.
The two teams combined for 34 hits, including a season-high 20 by Waynesburg, seven errors and 10 walks, with five different Waynesburg hitters picking up at least three hits each. Goeggelman and Hanning led the way with a game-high four hits a piece. They both drove in two runs a piece.
White added three hits, including a triple, two RBI and four runs scored.
Starter Patrick Logan got the on the mound for Waynesburg after working five innings, giving up five hits, four of which were earned, and three walks. He also picked up two strikeouts on the day.
Waynesburg returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action on Wednesday, Apr. 15, when they host Grove City.
