WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Apr. 17) – The Waynesburg baseball team fell behind early and never recovered as they dropped a 13-3 home contest to Geneva on Friday.
The Yellow Jackets are now 14-13 on the season, while Geneva improved 17-9 on the year.
The Golden Tornadoes led from start to finish and built a 13-0 lead after seven innings of competition. The Jackets were able to score a run in the bottom of the eighth and added two runs in the bottom of the ninth when centerfielder Rob Cool Jr drove in a pair of runs on a two-out single.
Though the numbers on the scoreboard were far from kind for Waynesburg, the hit totals were very close, with the Tornadoes out-hitting their hosts 14 to 13. However the visitors took advantage of nine walks and two hit batsmen. They also recorded six extra-base hits, including three homeruns.
Though their efforts came in a losing contest, several Yellow Jacket batters put together big days at the plate. Cool pounded out a team-best four hits and drove in all three of his team's runs.
Second baseman Wes White Jr went three-for-five at the dish with two runs scored and a stolen base. Catcher Brendan Scioscia and designated hitter Bill Hanning each recorded a two-for-four afternoon at Madison Field.
Junior #Bryan Leones started and took the loss on the mound after giving up five earned runs on six hits over three innings of work. Freshman Ben Oviatt# looked good in relief as he struck out the side twice over the eighth and ninth innings to close the day.
Geneva's Matt Baer got the win after giving up just an unearned run on nine hits and a walk.
These same two teams will go at it again on Saturday, when they face off in a doubleheader in Beaver Falls. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
