Jacket bats explode in game two of Geneva doubleheader

After losing the opener, Waynesburg takes game two 20-15

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Apr. 18) – After dropping the opener of their road doubleheader at Geneva on Saturday, the Waynesburg baseball team exploded for 20 runs in a game-two win.

 

The Yellow Jackets fell 8-5 in the opener and followed with a 20-15 slugfest victory over the Golden Tornadoes. After a day filled with offense, Waynesburg's record jumped to 15-14 on the year, while Geneva is now 18-10.

In game one, Waynesburg actually held a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, but gave up a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth. 

Sophomore Jesse Gonzalez suffered the loss on the mound for Waynesburg after starting and working three innings.

 

Following their second loss to Geneva this season, Waynesburg enjoyed their biggest offensive outburst of the year.

 

After the Golden Tornadoes jumped out to an 11-4 lead following three innings, the Yellow Jackets exploded for their first of two eight-run innings in the fourth, Giving them a 12-11 advantage. Surprisingly, Waynesburg scored all their runs in the frame without the help of a homerun.

 

The Jackets used six singles, two doubles and two walks as 13 batters came to the plate for Waynesburg. Right fielder Andrew Spargur reached base twice with a single and a walk. Designated hitter Bill Hanning and centerfielder Rob Cool Jr drove in two runs each during the breakout inning.

 

The Yellow Jackets took a 20-11 lead when they added eight more runs to their total in the top of the seventh. Again, they did it without the assistance of a homerun, as they were able to put together five singles, two doubles and a walk.

 

Cool, second baseman Wes White Jr and catcher Brendan Scioscia drove in two runs a piece during the game-clinching inning. White and Spargur picked up two runs a piece in the big frame.

 

Geneva was able to put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but relief pitcher Patrick Logan snuffed out the comeback to wrap up the victory.

 

In the victory, five different Waynesburg batters picked up at least three hits each. White and Scioscia led the attack with four hits each, while the Jacket second baseman tallied three RBI and three runs scored. Scioscia also drove in three and scored two more runs.

 

Cool drove in a game-high five runs, and Spargur scored a contest-best four runs, while going three-for-three at the plate with two walks.

 

Zac Rhoades got the win in relief after working the third inning of the offensive slugfest.

 

The Jackets hope to bring their red-hot bats with them on Monday, Apr. 20, when they host Grove City in a key nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game.
