WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Apr. 2) – Thanks to some strong play by the higher-numbered singles and doubles players, the Yellow Jacket men's tennis team earned a solid 5-4 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Thursday.
The win was the Waynesburg's third in a row and moved them ahead of the Presidents in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) standings. The Jackets are now 3-1 in conference play and 4-3 overall. W&J falls to 2-2 in conference action and 3-2 on the year.
The home team opened by taking a 2-1 lead following doubles play. While Waynesburg dropped the match at number-one doubles, the Jackets rebounded with victories at second and third doubles.
Sophomore #Emile Khoury and freshman Peter Mally# picked up the 8-4 win over David Dubois and Lionel Grimaldi at second doubles, while junior Adam Woodruff and senior Dustin Cozad teamed up to drop the W&J duo of Eric Sillard and Matt Varacallo 8-2.
In singles play, the Presidents rebounded by picking up victories at first, second and third singles. However, Waynesburg was able to snag the victory thanks to wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles.
At the number-four spot, Khoury downed Dubois 6-4, 6-3. Woodruff added a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Varcallo and Cozad ensured the win with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Sillard.
Waynesburg will go for fourth win in a row over a PAC opponent on Friday, when they host Thomas More on Friday. The match will be held at the Western YMCA at Robinson Township.
