MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Apr. 8) – The Waynesburg University baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back and down Bethany 10-8 on Wednesday afternoon.
The game was played at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W.Va. and completed a three-game season sweep of the Bison for the Yellow Jackets. Waynesburg improved to 6-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) and 11-11 overall. Bethany dropped to 1-16 in conference action and 0-9 in conference play.
Things started out very well for the Jackets as they put up six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman catcher Brendan Scioscia drilled a three-run homer to put Waynesburg up 4-0, and freshman leftfielder Kenny Grant followed two hitters later with a two-run jack to build the lead up to 6-0.
The Yellow Jackets looked like they would cruise to victory as starting pitcher Zac Rhoades retired the first 10 batters he faced and didn't allow a run through four innings.
However, the Bison came back with a total of eight runs over the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take an 8-6 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, the Jackets were able to take the lead for good.
After tying the game at 8-8, Scioscia ripped a two-run double to right that scored the tying and go-ahead runs.
Freshman pitcher Steve Ferimer got a game-ending double play from the middle of the infield to clinch the victory.
Scioscia was one of three Waynesburg hitters, along with shortstop Athony Defilippo and first baseman Brandon Dittmar, to have three hits. The Waynesburg catcher drove in a game-high five runs.
Jacket relief pitcher Ryan Schell got the win in relief.
Waynesburg returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Saint Vincent.
