Baseball team rolls over Saint Vincent

Yellow Jackets sting Bearcats in 9-0 road win

Box Score

LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 9) – It took the Waynesburg bats a little while to get warmed up in a nine-inning game at Saint Vincent on Thursday, but once they did, the Bearcats couldn't stop them.

The Yellow Jackets blew open a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the sixth, three in the top of the seventh and five in the top of the ninth to down Saint Vincent 9-0. The win improves Waynesburg's overall record to 12-11 on the year, while the Bearcats dropped to 2-22.

The contest began as a pitchers duel between Waynesburg's Tim Knight and Saint Vincent's Darren Smith. The two went back-and-forth through five scoreless innings, with both hurlers getting out of several jams.

However, the Yellow Jackets finally cashed in on a sixth-inning scoring opportunity when sophomore centerfielder Rob Cool Jr singled, stole a base and scored on a balk by Smith.

In the seventh, Waynesburg loaded the bases on consecutive singles by designated hitter Patrick Logan, right fielder Andrew Spargur and second baseman Wes White Jr.

Following White's hit, freshman third baseman Corey Goeggelman slapped a two-run single to put his team up 3-0. Cool followed with a run-producing single to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Jackets took total control in the ninth when they batted all the way through the order. Freshman leftfielder Chris Dittmar capped the scoring with a two-run double that scored catcher Brendan Scioscia and first baseman Brandon Dittmar.

While Saint Vincent's pitching staff was getting roughed up, Knight put forth a stellar effort to pick up his first win of the season. The Carnegie native scattered seven hits and a walk over eight innings of work to get the victory.

Junior Bryan Leones gave up just a hit as he worked the ninth inning.

Smith took the loss after giving up three runs in six innings of work.

While all nine starters recorded at least one hit on the day, including five of whom connected for multiple knocks, Waynesburg's top offensive performer was Cool, who went four-for-five with an RBI and two runs scored.

As a team, the Jackets out-hit their hosts 18-8. Waynesburg also did not commit an error.

Goeggelman and Chris Dittmar drove in two runs each.

The same two teams will meet up on Saturday, Apr. 11, when Waynesburg hosts Saint Vincent for a doubleheader that is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
