BETHANY, W.Va. (Jan. 27) – Despite a game-high 22 points from junior forward Elisha Jones, the Waynesburg University women's basketball team dropped a 66-62 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Bethany on Wednesday night.
The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 6-12 on the season and 3-6 in PAC play, while the Bison improved to 5-13 on the year and 2-7 in conference action.
Despite the final outcome, things started out on a positive note for the visiting Jackets, who led throughout the first six-plus minutes of play. Bethany took their first lead at 13-11 with 13:09 to go in the first half. From there, the two teams went back and forth over the first 20 minutes of play, before the Bison went into the locker room with a 34-31 advantage.
In the second period, Waynesburg went on a 15-7 run to take their largest lead of the game (46-41). Unfortunately the Bison responded with a 7-2 run of their own to tie the contest at 48-48 with 9:13 left in the contest.
For the next eight-plus minutes, the two teams battled through a hard-fought home stretch to the finish. However, with 44 seconds remaining in the contest and the Jackets trailing by just one point (63-62), Bethany put up the final three points of the game to clinch the game.
Though it came in a losing effort, Jones poured in 22 points on 10-of-20 shooting. She also contributed on the defensive end with three blocked shots and played all 40 minutes of the contest. Sophomore point guard Hannah Hunter added 12 points for the Jackets, while freshman forward Brittany Spencer pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
The Bison featured four different players who scored at least 11 points each.
Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 30, when they travel to Grove City to face the Wolverines in a PAC contest.
