GROVE
CITY, Pa. (Jan. 30) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team couldn't overcome the hot-shooting squad from Grove City as the Yellow Jackets dropped a 66-52 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest to the Wolverines.

With the loss, the Jackets fell to 6-13 on the season and 3-7 in the PAC. Grove City improved to 9-10 on the year and 6-4 in conference action.

After falling behind 27-19 at halftime, the Jackets rebounded in the second period by exploding for a 14-2 run that gave the visitors a 33-29 lead. The Wolverines responded with a 6-0 run of their own to take a two-point lead (35-33), before Waynesburg was able to tie the game back up on a three-pointer by junior forward Elisha Jones.

After the Jackets regained the lead at 38-37 on a three-pointer by senior guard Johnna Deco, Grove City fired back with a 10-0 spurt that put them ahead 47-38. However, the Jackets refused to give up and were able to trim the deficit down to just three points (55-52) with five minutes left to play.

Unfortunately, the home team was able to put the contest out of reach by scoring the next nine points to take a 12-point lead at 64-52. From there, the Wolverines closed out their opponents to pick up the victory.

GCC was very efficient from the floor all day as they connected on 51 percent of their shots (28-of-55). Waynesburg, meanwhile, could only find the bottom of the net on 17-of-54 tries (31.5 percent).

While Grove City was better on their overall shooting, the Jackets were the superior team when it came to three-point shooting and efficiency from the free throw line. Waynesburg hit on a third of their shots from downtown (seven-of-21), while GCC made just one three-pointer in eight attempts. At the line, the Jackets were nearly flawless (13-of-14) and Grove City made 69 percent of their tries (nine-of-13).

Jones led all Waynesburg scorers with 16 points on seven-of-14 shooting. Sophomore point guard Hannah Hunter added 10 points, as did sophomore reserve Morgan Hoone. Deco chipped in nine points on the day, while freshman forward Brittany Spencer pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Grove City was led by standout junior forward Christine Slater, who went off for a game-high 26 points on 12-of-15 shooting.

The Waynesburg women return to the courts on Feb. 3, when they travel to Westminster to face the Titans in a PAC showdown.
