Short-handed Jackets can't handle Westminster

Waynesburg women fall to Titans in PAC matchup

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 5) – Injuries, illness and struggles from beyond the three-point arc combined to hamper the Waynesburg women's basketball team during their 67-53 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to Westminster on Tuesday night.

The defeat dropped the Yellow Jackets to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in PAC play. The win boosted the Titans' conference mark to 3-1, and moved them to 4-7 overall.

Already missing All-PAC forward Elisha Jones because of illness, Waynesburg was dealt another blow as their other all-conference forward, and current PAC Player of the Week, Callie White went down after just four minutes on the court with an injury.

Down two key players, Waynesburg fell behind 30-23 at halftime. Westminster also did their part to put the host team in a hole by out-shooting the Jackets 44 percent (11-of-25) to 26 percent (8-of-31). The Titans also nailed four three-pointers on just eight tries, while Waynesburg missed on all 11 first-half attempts.

In the second half, Westminster looked like it was going to turn the game into a laugher as they built leads as large as 23 points (48-25). However, Waynesburg showed good heart late in the contest, and made the game interesting by pulling to within 10 (63-53) with 1:08 to go.

Unfortunately, the Titans were able to regroup and put the game away.

Westminster guard Amy Dolsak poured in a game-high 22 points in the win, and also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds. Reserve guard/forward Sam Higgins added 17 off the bench on six-of-eight shooting from the floor.

Waynesburg was led by sophomore point guard Hannah Hunter, who recorded a team-best 11 points. Freshman reserve Paige Pearce chipped in 10 points on the night. Pearce also tied for the game high in rebounds (8) with freshman forward Brittany Spencer.

The Jackets will try to get back in the wins column on Thursday, when they head to Greenville for a 6 p.m. PAC contest at Thiel.
