OBERLIN, Ohio (Nov. 29) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team raced out to a big halftime lead and went on pick up an 89-70 road victory at Oberlin Monday night.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets (2-1) have already matched last year's win total. The Jackets also avenged a 63-51 defeat at the hands of the Yeomen (1-3) from last season by building up a 46-21 advantage over their opponents in the first 20 minutes of competition and withstanding a second-half push by Oberlin to clinch the victory.
Waynesburg got off to a hot start by scoring the first six points of the game. After Oberlin trimmed the advantage down to just two (6-4), Waynesburg went on a 14-0 run over just a few minutes early in the first half to build a 20-4 lead and gain firm control of the contest.
The Jackets were far from done in the first 20 minutes of play. After having their 14-point burst ended by a two-pointer that made the score 20-6, Waynesburg exploded for a 17-0 outburst that moved the visiting team ahead 37-6 with 4:54 to go until the break.
Oberlin was able to trim the lead down at the end of the period, but the Jackets were still able to take a 25-point lead into the locker room. Waynesburg's bench out-scored Oberlin's reserves by an impressive 26-0 margin in the first half.
The Yeomen out-scored their competition 49-43 in the second half, but it was far too little, too late as the Jackets cruised to the win.
Waynesburg held the advantage over their opponents in most major team offensive categories. The visitors put together a strong all-around shooting night, hitting on 48 percent of their shots on the night (26-of-54), but were particularly potent from long range. The Jackets were successful on 11-of-21 tries from outside the three-point line. The Yellow Jackets were also better from the free throw line (26-of-36 to 14-of-21), had more success on the boards (41 to 35) and dished out more assists (15 to nine).
A balanced Jacket offensive attack featured nine players who put up at least six points each. Senior guard Steven Iser, junior guard Larry Alexander dropped in a team-best 11 points each to lead the charge, while junior forward Lou Galante chipped in 10. Sophomore center Kurt Bonnet paced Waynesburg with six rebounds, but four different Jackets pulled down at least five boards.
The Yellow Jackets will make their home debut when they return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 1. They will be hosting Hilbert.
