NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (March 30) – The Waynesburg University baseball team held leads in both games of a doubleheader at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Westminster on Tuesday.
Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets were unable to hold the advantage in either contest as the Titans swept the visiting team by the final scores of 9-5 and 13-10. The losses dropped the Jackets to 6-10 on the season and 2-3 in PAC play. Westminster improved to 6-9 on the year and 3-1 in conference action.
In game one, Waynesburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Corey Goeggelman slapped a one-out single and was followed by junior shortstop Anthony DeFilippo singling as well. With two men on, first baseman Bill Hanning doubled in the game's first run. The next batter, sophomore catcher Brendan Scioscia came up with a two-run single to put his team ahead 3-0.
Westminster responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-3 lead. The Jackets trimmed the lead down to one (5-4) in the top of the third when Scioscia singled in his third run of the game.
After the Titans bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to build a 7-4 advantage, the Jackets added their final run in the top of the fifth when first-year outfielder Nick Berdine picked up an RBI single. Westminster added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to sew up the win.
Defilippo, Scioscia and senior second baseman Wes White Jr produced two hits each in the opener. Scioscia added a game-high three runs batted in. Junior Jesse Gonzalez took the loss after allowing five earned runs in just 1.1 innings pitched.
Waynesburg looked poised to avenge their defeat in game two when they turned a 4-3 deficit into a 10-4 advantage after posting seven runs in the top of the third inning. In the big frame, The Jackets sent 10 batters to the plate, six of which collected at least one hit each, all singles. Scioscia singled twice in the inning, while Hanning drove in two runs on a base knock.
Unfortunately, those were the last runs put up by the visiting team and Westminster went to work in cutting into the lead. The Titans posted four runs fourth and tied the game at 10-10 in the seventh. With two outs on the board, the home team put two runners on the board and won the game in dramatic walk-off style with a three-run blast.
Five different Jackets recorded two hits each in the loss, including Hanning, who drove in a game-high three runs. Junior Rob Cool Jr launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the second.
Junior Tim Knight suffered the loss on the mound for Waynesburg. He worked all 6.2 innings and yielded 11 earned runs on 14 hits. He added two strikeouts on the day.
The Jackets will try to bounce back from the disappointing sweep on Wednesday, March 31, when they travel to Grove City for a nine-inning PAC contest with the Wolverines. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
