WAYNESBURG, Pa (April 18) – The Waynesburg University baseball team didn't let the cold temperatures bother them as they won 7-3 over Saint Vincent College on Sunday to take two contests in a three-game weekend series from the Bearcats. The victory is also Waynesburg's fifth in the last seven games.
The Yellow Jackets record moves to 11-15 overall, while the Bearcats fall to 14-11.
The Jackets were led by a strong pitching performance from freshman Anthony Longo, who just missed out on a complete game. Longo pitched 8.1 innings on the afternoon, scattering 10 hits while giving up three runs and striking out one.
Both pitchers had to dance around threats all afternoon as each team reached double figures in hits. Saint Vincent got on the board quickly in the top of the first. First, leadoff man Danny Jackson singled and came around to score on a two-out single by Bearcat designated hitter Grant Krally as the Bearcats jumped ahead 1-0.
Waynesburg answered quickly in the bottom of the first with a run of their own as senior second baseman #Wes White, Jr led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Sophomore third baseman Corey Goeggelman reached on a bunt base hit before centerfielder Rob Cool Jr#. singled home White to tie the score.
The score remained tied at one until Waynesburg took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning. After one out was recorded, Goeggleman and Cool hit back-to-back singles to put runners on second and third as the Jackson made an error on the play. Shortstop Anthony Defilippo singled in Goeggleman to make it 2-1 Jackets.
Waynesburg extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth. After right fielder Nick Berdine led off with a triple, senior designated hitterBryan Leones singled to center to bring Berdine home to make it 3-1. The Yellow Jackets were not done as they added two more runs later in the inning on a White home run to make the lead 5-1.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Bearcats were able to add a tally of their own to draw the score to 5-2. However, the Yellow Jackets added onto the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Senior first baseman Patrick Logan tripled down the right field line to start the inning. After it looked like the Bearcats would dodge another threat, Cool delivered a two-run single to plate Logan and White to make it 7-2.
The Bearcats wouldn't go quietly in the top of the ninth, as they scored a run to make it 7-3, and the visitors put runners on base before sophomore pitcher Chris Dittmar came in out of the bullpen to induce a ground ball double play to end the contest.
Cool had a big day at the plate to pace the Waynesburg attack. He went a perfect four-for-four at the dish with a double and three RBI. He reached base a fifth time when he was hit by a pitch. White drove in three runs and scored two more. For the day, eight of the nine Waynesburg position starters recorded at least one hit each.
Waynesburg won't have much time to savor the victory as they step out of conference to take on Penn State-Altoona for a doubleheader on Tuesday in Altoona, Pa. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
