BETHANY, W.Va. (April 6) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team rolled to a 7-2 road Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over Bethany on Tuesday.
It was the third win in a row for the Yellow Jackets, all of which have come in PAC play. The victory also moves Waynesburg to 3-2 on the season, while the Bison drop to 2-6 on the year (0-4).
The Yellow Jackets jumped on top of their opponents with a sweep of the day's three doubles matches. Sophomore Peter Mally and junior Emile Khoury picked up an 8-2 win over Bethany's Jason Straw and Levi Naylor at first doubles. At second doubles, the senior pair of Jeff Canning and Adam Woodruff downed Dustin Opalka and Jay Lyonett 8-1. The Jackets completed the pairs sweep when first-year players Jon Anderson and Jason Logan put away Ryan Rokisky and Evan Oslund 8-4 at the number-three spot.
Waynesburg sealed up the win by taking four of the six singles matches. No victory was as thrilling as Canning's hard-fought triumph over Straw. After dropping the first set 7-6 (7-5), Canning rebounded with a 6-1 win in set two and put the match away with a 7-6 (7-2) score in set three.
Khoury followed with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Naylor at third singles, before the Bison notched a win at number-four singles. Logan and Anderson wrapped things up with straight-set wins at fifth and sixth singles. Logan downed Rokinsky 6-4, 7-5 and Anderson beat Oslund 6-3, 6-3.
The Yellow Jackets will go for their fourth win in a row on Thursday, April 8, when they travel to Ohio to face Marietta.
