MARIETTA, Ohio (April 8) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team battled hard, but a pair of close losses in the doubles ranks ultimately led Marietta to a 5-4 win over the visiting Yellow Jackets on Thursday.
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets dropped to 3-3 on the season, while the Pioneers improved to 3-2. The defeat also ended Waynesburg's three-match winning streak.
All three doubles matches were closely-contested competitions. However, the home team was able to pick up an 8-6 win at first doubles and a 9-7 triumph at the number-three spot. Waynesburg's Jeff Canning and Adam Woodruff picked up an 8-6 victory at the number-two spot to avoid a doubles sweep.
The Jackets were able to rebound in the singles ranks with wins at the first, second and third spots. Peter Mally won 7-5, 6-4 over Marietta's Josh Patterson at the top spot and was followed by Canning picking up a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Ryan Wong at number-two singles. Waynesburg's final victory came at third singles, where Emile Khoury downed Andrew Bolton 6-1, 6-1.
Marietta was able to win the final three singles matches to pull out the victory.
Waynesburg is scheduled to return to the courts on Saturday, April 10, when it heads to New Wilmington to face Westminster in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match.
