WAYNESBURG, Pa. (May 8) – The Waynesburg baseball team gave Washington & Jefferson all they could handle during Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader in Waynesburg.
Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets dropped a pair of two-run losses to the Presidents by the final scores of 3-1 and 10-8. With the losses, the Jackets dropped to 15-22 on the season and 6-12 in PAC play. The Presidents, who locked up the top seed in the upcoming PAC Tournament, are now 30-8 on the season and 16-2 in conference action. Waynesburg celebrated senior day before the twin bill got underway.
After the two teams combined for 40 runs on 48 hits in a nine-inning contest on Friday, the two teams locked horns in a seven-inning pitchers' dual between Waynesburg junior Jesse Gonzalez and W&J senior Jim Pasquine. The two hurlers kept the game scoreless through three innings, before the Presidents struck first with a run in the top of the fourth.
The Jackets answered back with a run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI double by third baseman Corey Goeggelman that plated designated hitter Bryan Leones, who led off with a single. After knotting the contest up at 1-1, the visitors won the game after posting a run in the top of the sixth and one in the top of the seventh.
Gonzalez yielded just seven hits over 6.1 innings, but two of Waynesburg's three errors directly led to the game-deciding runs. He walked two and struck out one. Pasquine scattered five hits over 6.2 innings on the mound.
Both teams found their offense in game two. After W&J jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Jackets answered back with five runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-2 lead. The home team sent nine batters to the plate in the frame. Leones, sophomore catcher Brendan Scioscia and first-year right fielder Nick Berdine drove in a run each during the outburst. Waynesburg also took advantage of two President errors to help push the handful of runs across.
The Yellow Jackets maintained their three-run lead until the top of the fourth, when W&J put six runs on the scoreboard. The Presidents combined three hits with five Jacket walks or hit batsmen to take the lead, but the home team quickly responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Much like their counterparts, the Jackets took advantage of their opponents' mistakes to help push runs across home plate. Waynesburg managed just two hits in the fourth, but were assisted by a walk, a wild pitch and a balk.
The score remained tied at 8-8 until the top of the sixth, when W&J took the final lead of the game on a two-run homer. The Jackets had one more chance to pull out a victory after putting two runners on with two outs on the board in the bottom of the seventh. However, the Presidents were able to record the final out of the contest to close out the win.
A pair of Waynesburg seniors, second baseman Wes White Jr and first baseman Patrick Logan, paced the Jacket offense with two hits each in game two. White went two-for-three with a stolen base and two runs scored, while Logan went two-for-four.
Saturday's losses were especially hard to swallow, considering the fact they officially eliminated Waynesburg from the race to get into the 2010 PAC baseball playoffs.
The Jackets are scheduled to play their season finale' on Tuesday, May 11, when they host national powerhouse Marietta for a nine-inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
