Offensive struggles lead to Waynesburg men's hoops defeat

Grove City stifles Yellow Jackets in 46-39 PAC meeting

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 29) – The good news is the Waynesburg University men's basketball team held Grove City to just 46 points on Saturday. The bad news is, the Yellow Jackets scored their fewest points in 20 years as they dropped a 46-39 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup on Saturday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

A slow, methodical Wolverine offense, combined with a 33-percent shooting effort from the home team led to the Yellow Jacket loss, which dropped them to 5-14 on the year and 2-7 in PAC play. Waynesburg's 39 points was the program's lowest output since the 1990-91 season, when they managed 39 points against Bridgewater State. The win, which snapped Grove City's 11-game losing streak, bumped their overall record to 5-14 and improved their conference mark to 2-8.

After being held to just 12 points in the first half, Waynesburg trailed 21-12 going into the locker room. After falling behind by 10 midway through the second half, the Jackets finally found some offensive rhythm with a 10-2 run that cut Grove City's lead to 28-26 with 9:40 left to play. That was as close as the Jackets could get to pulling off the victory.

Junior forward Jeff Young put up over a third of his team's points with a game-high 14 points. He also tied for a team high with five rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets will try to end a seven-game losing streak on Wednesday, Feb. 2, when they host Westminster for their fourth-straight home game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
