Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 29) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team out-scored visiting Grove City 34-25 in the second half of Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown on its way to 58-44 victory.

The win avenges a loss at Grove City earlier this year and also improves the Yellow Jackets' overall record to 14-5. Waynesburg is now 7-4 in PAC play. The loss dropped the Wolverines to 10-9 on the season and 6-5 in conference play. The victory also snapped a seven-game losing streak to Grove City.

After the two teams played most of the first half within just a few points of each other, Waynesburg was able to build an eight-point lead (24-16) with 3:46 showing on the clock before halftime. The Yellow Jackets maintained a multi-basket lead until the halftime break, when they went into the locker room with a 24-19 lead.

After the visitors opened up the second period with a quick basket to trim the deficit to three points (24-21), the Jackets responded with six unanswered points to take a 30-21 advantage three minutes into the half. From that point on, Waynesburg never led by fewer than six points on their way to the 14-point win. The Jackets led for better than 35 minutes on the evening.

Senior forward Elisha Jones turned in another stellar performance after pouring in a game-high 20 points and tying for the game high with eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Jessi Drayer added 11 in her first start as a Jacket, as did junior point guard Hannah Hunter. Hunter also dished out a game-high five assists and was one of three Jacket players to swipe four steals.

The Jackets forced 15 steals, while giving up just three to the Wolverines. The home team forced a total of 24 turnovers, while yielding just nine to their opponents.

Waynesburg returns to action on Wednesday, when they host Westminster in another PAC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
