NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Jan. 4) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team took control of a close game down the stretch and picked up a 75-69 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over Westminster on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in PAC play. The victory also snapped a four-game losing streak to the Titans, who fell to 3-10 on the season and 0-4 in conference action.
The Jackets led for almost the entire contest, but trailed by one with 12:56 to go in the game. At that point, Waynesburg embarked on a 13-0 run that gave the visitors their largest lead of the game at 62-50 with just over eight minutes showing on the clock.
Senior guard Erik Noone played a big role in the scoring surge by knocking down a pair of three-pointers. Noone scored all eight of his points in the second half.
Senior guard Steven Iser led a balanced Jacket attack with a team highs in points (17) and rebounds. The Maryland native connected on four-of-six tries from three-point range and was one of eight Waynesburg players to score at least five points on the night. Freshman point guard Nick Herman added 10 points, while junior forward Jeff Young and sophomore Aaron Cromwell chipped in nine each.
The Jacket bench out-scored their counterparts 17-11 in the second half, but Waynesburg's big scoring advantage came in the paint, where they recorded 16 points over the final 20 minutes of play, compared to the Titans' six points.
The Yellow Jackets also enjoyed one of their finest shooting nights of the season after knocking down 50 percent of their attempts from the field (27-of-54) and 53 percent of their tries from three-point range (nine-of-17).
Waynesburg returns home to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Thursday, when they conference-leading Thiel. The two teams tip off at 7:30 p.m.
