Box Score
WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 6) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team gave the Presidents' Athletic Conference's (PAC) top team, the Thiel Tomcats, all they could handle before losing the game by the score of 72-66 at home on Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets (5-8, 2-2) fired out of the gate, shooting 62 percent from behind the arc in route to a 34-34 tie at the half.
The Jackets managed to grab a 45-43 lead early in the second half and were down by just four points with 8:47 remaining in the game.
The Tomcats (8-4, 4-0), however, showed why they are currently at the top of the PAC, and calmly went on a 9-0 run to go up by 13 points with just under five minutes remaining. The Jackets weren't ready to quit and cut the Tomcat advantage to four with under a minute left. Unfortunately, the Cats didn't break on the night and hit several key free throws down the stretch to ice the game and take home a win.
The Jackets were led in scoring by senior Erik Noone, who shot five-of-eight from the floor, including four-of-seven from behind the three-point line, for 14 points. Junior forward Jeff Young recorded his third double-double this season on 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Two of Young's points came on a highlight reel worthy-slam dunk late in the first half.
Sophomore Aaron Cromwell added nine points and seven rebounds, while fellow sophomore Kurt Bonnet chipped in six points and five boards.
The Jackets will look to get back to their winning ways when the Thomas More Saints come to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday, January 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
