Women's soccer battles Bethany to 1-1 tie

Yellow Jackets stay in the hunt for PAC playoff berth

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 26) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team battled Bethany in a crucial Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown on Wednesday night at John F. Wiley Stadium. The two teams, who are both fighting for a spot in the four-team PAC tournament, locked horns for 110 minutes, but in the end, neither squad could secure a victory as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Heading into Saturday's regular season finale at Thomas More, the Yellow Jackets are in fourth place in the conference standings with a 5-2-1 PAC mark and 14-3-1 overall record. Bethany sits in sixth place with an 8-7-1 season record and a 4-3-1 conference mark. The contest also featured the top two individual scorers in the conference in Waynesburg senior Courtney Ebersole and Bethany senior Cassie Spalding, who both went into the night with 31 points and 13 goals.

Spalding nearly broke up the tie with Ebersole during the 51st minute of play when the Yellow Jackets yielded an own goal to give the Bison a 1-0 lead. Spalding was in the area of the ball and actually buried it into the back of the net after it had already slowly rolled over the goal line.

Bethany maintained its advantage for the next 29 minutes of play and looked like they were going to pull out the crucial victory. However, Ebersole tallied her 32nd point of the season when she set up sophomore teammate Taylor Augustine for the game-tying tally in the 80th minute of competition, bringing about the eventual final score of 1-1.

After being out-shot 5-4 in the first half, Waynesburg held the shooting advantage in the second half of overtime and out-shot Bethany 5-1 during the overtime periods. Katrina Kelly, one of six seniors being honored during the Jackets' senior night festivities, made five saves in net.

Waynesburg's game at Thomas More is expected to start at 12 p.m.
