WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 22) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team rolled to its second-straight win to open the 2011-12 season on Tuesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets boasted three double-digit scorers and never trailed during a 69-45 win over Hood College.
The Jackets (2-0) built up a 13-3 lead over the first 6:11 of playing time and never looked back on their way to victory. Several long runs and a solid defensive effort helped the home team build up leads as large as 21 points (32-11) in the first 20 minutes of play, before Waynesburg went into the locker room with a 34-22 advantage over the Blazers (0-3).
Waynesburg didn't let up in the second half and continued to build on its lead until the final buzzer. The 69-45 final was the biggest lead for either team on the night. Speaking of advantages, the Jackets out-rebounded their opponents 51-to-40, recorded 20 steals to Hood's 11 and made 30-of-78 tries from the floor (38.5 percent) to the Blazers' 15-of-56 performance (26.8 percent).
The Jackets were paced offensively by junior guard
Brittany Spencer, who tallied a team-high 13 points and added eight rebounds. Sophomore forward
Elaine Hasek chipped in 12 on five-of-10 shooting, while junior guard
Jessi Drayer notched her first double-double on the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with four assists, four blocks and three steals. Senior point guard
Hannah Hunter dished out a game-best eight assists and swiped a contest-best eight steals to go along with seven points scored.
Hood's Emily Maerz came off the bench to knock down five three-pointers as part of a game-high 17-point showing.
The Jackets will look to keep their momentum rolling into the weekend, when they travel to Alliance, Ohio to take part in the Mount Union Invitational. Waynesburg plays their first of two games on Friday, Nov. 25, against Manchester. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
