ALLIANCE, Ohio (Nov. 26) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting squad from Allegheny College in Saturday's consolation game of the Mount Union M Club Shootout. The Gators pumped in 84 points and shot over 60 percent from the floor in an 84-74 victory over the Yellow Jackets to take third place at the event.
Though the Jackets (2-2) ended up losing their second-straight game, things started in their favor against Allegheny (4-2). Waynesburg scored the first four points of the game and built up a 16-11 lead after 7:19 of play. However, the Gators responded with a 9-2 run to grab a 20-18 lead midway through the opening period.
Neither team took more than a one-basket advantage for the next two minutes, but Allegheny put together a 7-0 surge that turned a 24-24 tie into a 31-24 lead with 6:16 left to play until halftime. Waynesburg spent the rest of the opening 20 minutes of action playing catch-up and got as close as three points to their opponents before the Gators took a 43-38 lead into the locker room.
After Allegheny knocked down a two-pointer to open the second quarter, Waynesburg roared back with a 10-1 run to regain the lead at 48-46 after 4:22 of action in the period. The game stayed a tightly-fought contest for the next few minutes. But with 13:12 left to play and the contest tied at 53-53, the Gators took off on a 16-3 sprint that put them ahead 69-56 with 6:36 showing on the clock. After going cold from the field and allowing their opponents to open up a double-digit lead, the Jackets never got closer than nine points of pulling out a come-from-behind win.
Waynesburg suffered the loss despite a tremendous offensive showing from junior guard
Jessi Drayer, who notched her second 20-plus point effort of the year by pouring in a team season-high 28 points on 11-of-21 shooting. The Waterford, Ohio native connected on five-of-eight tries from three-point range and also dished out two assists.

Junior Allegheny forward Heidei Goeller was one of three Gators to score at least 20 points. The 6-0 junior put together an impressive 24-point, 18-rebound double-double while leading her team to victory. As a squad, the Gators shot 60.4 percent from the floor, including 63 percent in the first half and 57.7 percent in the second. Waynesburg shot a respectable 41 percent for the game, but were out-rebounded 40-to-28. Allegheny also held a big advantage from the free throw line, knocking down 16-of-22 tries from the stripe, while Waynesburg made just six-of-nine tries.
After the conclusion of the two-day tournament, Drayer was honored as one of six members of the all-tournament team.
The Jackets will look to snap out of its two-game funk on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when the Thiel Tomcats come to town to open up Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
