WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 30) – Thanks to some red hot shooting from beyond the three-point line, the Waynesburg University men's basketball team stayed right with Thiel for the first 20 minutes of their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, the long distance shooting cooled off and Thiel's athletic squad cranked up the attack as the Tomcats earned an 83-59 victory at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The Yellow Jackets (2-4, 0-1) drilled seven-of-16 tries from downtown, including five makes in six tries from senior guard
Larry Alexander, to force a 42-42 tie at halftime with Thiel (3-2, 1-0). That hot shooting from three-point range helped to counter a 50 percent overall shooting performance by the Tomcats (18-of-36).
After both teams emerged from their respective locker rooms, momentum clearly shifted towards the visiting team, which scored the first five points to take a 47-42 lead 36 seconds into the half. Seven minutes into the half, Thiel built up a 54-48 lead and proceeded to go off on a 12-0 run that gave the Tomcats a 66-48 advantage with 6:57 left to play. The Cats continued to build up their advantage over the final minutes of action.
While Waynesburg used their three-point shooting to keep the contest close, Thiel's advantage down low and on the run resulted in a 54-22 advantage in the paint. That high percentage offense put together a 48.5 percent showing from the floor, as opposed to a 28.8 percent performance from the Jackets.
Alexander led the Waynesburg offense with 16 points, all in the first half. The Tomcats featured four different double-digit scorers, including forward Blair Rozenblad, who posted a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Jackets will take another shot at their first PAC win on Saturday, Dec. 3, when they host the Westminster Titans. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
