WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (Nov. 30) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team continued to fight through injuries to several key starters and showed tremendous effort during Wednesday's match at Division II West Liberty. Despite starting a slew of young backups, the Yellow Jackets stayed in a position to win for most of a 24-9 loss to the Hilltoppers.
The Jackets (1-4) got the night off to a strong start as
Alex Crown shut out Joe Wagstaff 7-0 to give his team a 3-0 lead. After WLU (3-0) won the next three bouts, including a pair closely fought decisions, to build a 10-3 lead, senior 157-pounder
Garett Johnston won his fourth-straight match by a 5-1 score over AJ Gavin to trim the deficit to 10-6.
The Hillers fired off two more decision wins to take a 16-6 lead before junior 184-pounder
Cody Catalina stopped the skid by gritting out a 3-2 victory over Derrick Williams to keep Waynesburg's hopes alive at 16-9. Freshman 197-pounder
Patrick Jennings gave West Liberty's Jacob Donley all he could handle, but a last-second escape by Donley gave him the match-clinching 5-4 decision victory.
Waynesburg and West Liberty both return to tournament competition on Saturday, Dec. 3, when the two squads will be a part of the field at the Ohio Northern Invitational.
