WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 10) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team never trailed in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game with Chatham University as the Yellow Jackets notched their fourth win in a row with an 81-54 victory over the Cougars on Saturday.
The win bumps the Yellow Jackets' record up to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in conference competition, while Chatham falls to 2-6 for the year and 0-4 in PAC play.
Despite playing just nine players, the Cougars kept the game close through the first 12 minutes, trailing just 24-19. However, the Jackets went on a 19-3 run to close out the half and take a 43-22 lead into the locker room.
Waynesburg never led by less than 18 points at any point in the second half as the Jackets showed just how dangerous they can be when they are out and running offensively. It is the first time since January 18, 2009 that the Jackets scored 80 plus points as a team, having done so in a win over Penn State Greater-Allegheny 80-56.
The Jackets were led by the guard tandem of junior
Jessi Drayer and senior
Hannah Hunter. Drayer scored a game-high and career-high 31 points for the Jackets on 13-of-20 shooting, including five-of-nine from behind the arc. Several of those baskets came on passes from senior Hunter, who had her first double-double of the season with 13 points to go along with a career-high 11 assists. Hunter also snagged six rebounds and swiped three steals.
Junior forward Paige Pierce came close to a double-double of her own, grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds and narrowly missing double digits with nine points. Sophomore forward
Elaine Hasek was the final Jacket scorer in double digits, adding 12 points in the win.
The home team out-performed their counterparts from Chatham in several offensive categories, most notably rebounding (51 to 23), three-point percentage (44 percent to 38 percent) and free-throw percentage (67 to 50).
The Cougars were led by guard Marguerite Sargent, who tallied a team-high 18 points.
The Jackets are on the road next, traveling to Uniontown, Pa. on Saturday, Dec. 17 to take on Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus.
