WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 30) – Senior point guard
Hannah Hunter led a group of five Waynesburg women's basketball players to reach double-digits in scoring on Friday as the Yellow Jackets beat the College of Wooster 81-48 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The win is the Jackets' seventh consecutive victory, improving their overall record to 9-2, while the Fighting Scots fall to 1-9. Waynesburg was able to control the contest from start to finish, and opened the game with a 27-15 run that lasted for half of the opening period. The home team was able to keep Wooster at bay and increased its lead to 42-23 at halftime.
The Jackets continued their strong play in the second half, leading by as many as 43 points (77-34) with 6:40 to go in the contest. The home team was able to empty its bench, with all 12 players logging quality minutes in the win.
The home team out-performed their opposition in several offensive categories, including field goal percentage (38 percent to 28 percent), points in the paint (26 to 12) and rebounding (57 to 40).
Hunter led all scorers with 20 points, while also posting team-highs in assists (eight) and steals (four). Junior guard
Jessi Drayer contributed 16 points and six rebounds, while freshmen
Hayden Giuliani came off the bench to add 12 points. Juniors
Brittany Spencer and Paige Pierce were the other two Jackets to reached double-digits, as they chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Pearce and sophomore
Elaine Hasek pulled down a team-best eight rebounds each.
The Fighting Scots were led by Karley Walker, who recorded 17 points in the loss.
Waynesburg plays its first game of 2012 on Jan. 4, when the Jackets travel to Latrobe, Pa. to take on Saint Vincent College in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
