Lady hoopsters drop two-point decision in regular season finale

Waynesburg falls 60-58 on the road at Geneva

Box Score

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Feb. 19) – With third place in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament already locked up, the Waynesburg women's basketball team looked to end its regular season on a winning note Saturday at Geneva.

The Yellow Jackets led late in the contest, but couldn't put the Golden Tornadoes away as Geneva pulled out a 60-58 win. Waynesburg ends the regular season with a 17-8 record, while Geneva ends their year at 8-17. The Jackets also finished the season with a 10-6 conference record.

The Tornadoes led by as many as 12 points (31-19) in the first half, but Waynesburg was able to cut the deficit down to just three (31-28) before breaking for halftime. After tying up the score at 39-39 early in the second period, the Jackets went on an 8-3 run that gave them a 47-42 lead with 9:37 showing on the clock.

The two teams battled down the stretch run of the matchup, but a Geneva layup put the home team up 59-58 with just 1:49 left to play. Unfortunately, Waynesburg couldn't put the go-ahead basket on the scoreboard and the Tornadoes hit a late free throw to close up the scoring.

Sophomore guard Jessi Drayer poured in a Waynesburg-high 16 points on six-of-12 shooting to lead the Jacket offensive attack. She also tied for the game lead with three steals. Senior forward Elisha Jones just missed out on a double-double performance after pouring in 15 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Brittany Spencer chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds on the day. Junior point guard Hannah Hunter dished out a game-high five assists.

Though the loss was a tough one to swallow, the Yellow Jackets will need to refocus quickly. Thanks to Bethany's 65-58 win over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday, the Jackets will host W&J on Tuesday in the first round of the PAC championship tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
