Men's hoopsters give top-seeded Thiel all they can handle in loss

Waynesburg pushes Tomcats to the limit before falling 73-63

Box Score

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 22) – The eighth-seeded Waynesburg University men's basketball team's upset bid of top-seeded Thiel College fell just short, as the Jackets' season came to an end with the 73-63 loss in Tuesday's quarterfinal game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Men's Basketball Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets hung right with the Tomcats throughout the first half and trailed by just three points (27-24) when the teams went to their respective locker rooms.

The Tomcats (19-6, 13-1), however, never lost their cool and answered seemingly every Waynesburg basket with one of their own. This point was illustrated by the Jackets shooting a solid 53 percent from the field in the second half, only to be outdone by the Tomcats' 56 percent performance. Because of Thiel's efforts, the Jackets could not chip away at the lead, as their four-point deficit (33-29) in the early minutes of the second half was as close as Waynesburg could get to pulling the upset.

Waynesburg was led in scoring by junior forward Jeff Young, who was one of three Jacket scorers in double figures. He went for 14 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals on the night. Fellow junior forward James Allenby added 10 points, as did freshman guard Nick Herman.

Senior guard Erik Noone completed his Waynesburg basketball career by adding nine points, while fellow senior Steven Iser chipped in four points and three rebounds.

The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets finished the 2011 season with a 6-20 overall record and were 2-12 in conference play.
