Men's basketball falls at conference-leading Thiel

Yellow Jackets lead early, but end up dropping 69-55 game to Tomcats

Box Score

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 5) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team stuck right with the top team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) during the first half of their matchup with Thiel on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Tomcats cranked it up in the second half of the matchup and put Waynesburg away by the final score of 69-55.

The Yellow Jackets (5-16, 2-9) trailed by just five (30-25) at halftime, but the Tomcats (15-6, 10-1) put the game out of reach by outscoring the visiting team 39-30 over the final 20 minutes of competition. With the win, the Cats remained on top of the conference standings.

Though they ended up on the short end of the stick, the Yellow Jackets got out to a strong start in Saturday's loss. With 9:44 to go in the first half, a two-pointer by junior forward Jeff Young gave Waynesburg a 20-11 lead, which was their biggest of the game. Unfortunately, Thiel went on an 11-0 run to move the Tomcats ahead 22-20. After a layup by junior forward Lou Galante tied the game back up at 22-22, Thiel went on an 8-3 surge to take the five-point lead into the locker room.

From there, Thiel never relinquished the advantage and built up leads as big as 25 points on their way to the victory. Sophomore Aaron Cromwell led the Jacket offense with a team-high 10 points off the bench. Young led all Waynesburg players with eight rebounds and chipped in six points.

The Jackets will try to bring their current nine-game losing streak to an end on Wednesday, Feb. 9, when they travel to Crestview Hills, Ky. to take on Thomas More. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
