WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 26) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday by hosting conference rival Westminster.
The match was close throughout the day, but when the final point was tallied, the Titans managed to slip past the Yellow Jackets by the final score of 5-4. With the win, Westminster improved to 1-7 on the year and 1-1 in conference play. The Yellow Jackets dropped to 1-2 for the season and 0-1 in the PAC.
Waynesburg opened up the contest by taking two of the three doubles matches. Senior Emile Khoury and junior Peter Mally got things started with a hard-fought 9-8 win at first doubles. The Jackets made it two in a row thanks to sophomore Jon Anderson and junior Jason Logan, who cruised to an 8-3 victory at number-two doubles.
Unfortunately, things didn't go as well for the home team during singles play, as the Titans fired back to take four-of-six solo matches. Khoury closed out a 2-0 day with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 triumph at second singles. Waynesburg's final team point of the day came courtesy of Anderson, who picked up a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set win at fourth singles.
The Jackets will take another shot at their first PAC win of 2011 on Tuesday, March 29, when they head to Washington & Jefferson to face the Presidents. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
