Jacket baseball team drops soggy home loss to Thomas More

Saints take weekend series 2-1 after downing Waynesburg 16-3

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 2) – The freezing cold and dreary skies that let loose with rain, snow and sleet all afternoon made an appropriate setting for a rough day on the field for the Waynesburg baseball team on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets gave up 15 hits, walked nine batters and hit five more as they dropped a 16-3 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest to 19th-ranked Thomas More on Saturday. The contest, which was called with one out on the board in the top of the ninth due to rain, wrapped up the two teams' three-game weekend series, which the Saints won 2-1.

After the Saints (13-2, 4-1) scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, the Yellow Jackets (6-14, 4-4) responded with a two-spot of their own in the bottom of the frame thanks in large part to a Thomas More error and a sacrifice fly out by junior first baseman Brendan Scioscia.

The two teams were tied up 2-2 going into the top of the second, where the Saints took a 5-2 lead after plating three more runs. The Jackets kept themselves in the picture for a win after junior Corey Goeggelman singled in senior Brandon Myers to cut the score to 5-3.

Unfortunately, that was the last run the home team was able to muster as the Saints' bats produced two more runs in the third, three in the fourth, three in the fifth and three in the sixth to take the victory.

Junior Rob Baumgartel was the first of six Waynesburg pitchers to take the mound on the afternoon. He suffered the loss after giving up five runs on three hits, two walks and three hit-batsmen in 1.2 innings of work. Sophomore Grant Lewis started and worked six innings to pick up the victory.

Though it came in a losing effort, Goeggelman gave his best performance at the plate this season. He went three-for-four with an RBI and a run scored. Senior shortstop Anthony DeFilippo also posted a multi-hit performance after picking up two singles in four trips to the plate and scoring a run.

Waynesburg will try to dry out from their latest game as they prepare to host PAC rival Westminster in a nine-inning affair on April 6. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
