WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 20) – The Waynesburg University baseball team played its third and fourth games of the week, splitting a doubleheader with Grove City at home on Wednesday.
Grove City (14-13, 9-6) picked up the win in game one with a 2-0 decision, as they got a dominant performance from their starter Kyle Silk. Silk went the distance, throwing seven innings, allowing just five hits and striking out eight. The Jackets and their bats would come alive quickly in game two picking up a 6-5 win.
The lone scoring in game one came in the top of the 2nd inning, as Grove City scored two runs off three hits. Jesse Gonzalez took the hard-luck loss, as he too went the distance, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out two.
The Jackets managed just five hits in game one; all singles. Leading the way for Waynesburg was catcher Brendan Scioscia, as he went two-for-three. Noah Pust, Dan Buzzard, and Anthony DeFilippo all had one hit.
Waynesburg got off to a fast start in game two by getting on the board first as Anthony DeFilippo connected on his eight home run of the season to put the Jackets ahead 1-0. The lead held up, in no small part to the pitching of starter Anthony Longo. Longo retired the side in order through two innings, and allowed just one hit through three.
The Jackets broke the game wide open in the bottom of the third, as the first batter of the inning, Mike Neckerman deposited the Grove City offering over the left field wall for his first home run of the season. After Corey Goeggleman beat out a bunt for a base hit, Noah Pust would single to move Goeggleman to third, setting the table for Brendan Scioscia. Scioscia didn't disappoint, slapping a double down the left field line, scoring Goeggleman. With two runners on, freshman Andrew Rose added to the lead with a two-out, seeing-eye single that scored both Pust and Scioscia to make the score 5-0 in favor of Waynesburg.
Grove City would finally get to Longo in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on a pair of doubles and an error on the third baseman. The Jackets would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run on a Goeggleman sacrifice bunt.
The insurance run would prove to be the difference maker, as the Wolverines scored three runs in the top of the seventh before Longo battled back and slammed the door shut to pick up his third win of the season. Brendan Scioscia went three-for-five on the day, with one run scored and a RBI.
Waynesburg is back in action on Thursday April 21, when the Jackets host the Thiel Tomcats in a nine inning PAC showdown. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
