Jackets erupt for 16 hits

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 23) - The Waynesburg University baseball team broke out in a big way at Thiel, routing the Thiel Tomcats 16-1 in nine innings.

The Jackets (12-19, 7-7 PAC) took an early lead, after Nick Berdine roped a bases-loaded single to centerfield, to score Anthony DeFilippo and give the Jackets a 1-0 lead.

The Tomcats would tie the game at one apiece in the bottom of the third on consecutive base hits. Waynesburg would regain the lead shortly after, capitalizing on an errant throw by the Tomcats third baseman to make the score 2-1. Waynesburg erupted for a seven run fifth inning to blow the game wide open, as 11 batters hit in the inning.

Freshman starting pitcher Zach Kreke picked up his second complete game win in seven days, as he went nine innings, surrendering just one run on nine hits and striking out one. Kreke improves to 2-2 on the season.

Offensively, seven different Jackets accounted for 16 hits. Anthony DeFilippo went two-for-five with a double and two runs scored, Noah Pust went three-for-six with a run scored and an RBI, while Nick Berdine went four-for-five with three runs scored and 3 RBIs. Tim Chilcote went three-for-four with two runs scored, three RBIs and his first home run of the season.

The Jackets will look to continue their winning ways, as they travel to Grove City on April 27 for a nine inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
