WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 7) – An offensive explosion in the top of the ninth inning more than sealed up a victory for visiting Westminster on Thursday under warm, sunny conditions in Waynesburg.
The host Yellow Jackets trailed just 4-0 going into the top of the final inning, but the Titans dropped 12 runs on their hosts and pulled away for a 16-0 victory. With the win, Westminster improved to 14-5 overall and 4-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while the Jackets fell to 6-15 for the season and 4-5 in conference action.
The visitors scored a run in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings before their offensive outburst. Waynesburg was out-hit by Westminster 17-7 on the day.
Though he took the loss, sophomore pitcher Anthony Longo put together a respectable outing on the hill. The second-year righty gave up four runs on seven hits and four walks over seven innings pitched. The Jacket bats were led by senior shortstop Anthony DeFilippo and senior right fielder Brandon Myers, who tallied two hits each in the loss.
Waynesburg will look for a better outcome on Saturday, April 9, when the Yellow Jackets return to non-conference play with a doubleheader at Kenyon College. First pitch of the twin-bill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
