WASHINGTON, Pa. (Jan. 18) – Wednesday night's win in Washington had to be one of the most satisfying in the recent history of the Waynesburg University men's basketball team. The Yellow Jackets shot a respectable 47 percent from the field, an impressive 46 percent from three-point range and held the leading scorer in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) to just two points during a 69-57 win over Washington & Jefferson.
With the win, Waynesburg (4-13, 1-7) snapped its 18-game PAC losing streak, and beat the Presidents (6-11, 2-6) for the first time since the 2004-05 season, a span of 14 games. The victory also ended a four-game losing streak, overall, and the 12-point margin of victory was the widest for the Yellow Jackets in a conference contest since beating Thiel 78-61 during the 2006-07 campaign.
The Jackets combined a respectable 15-of-31 shooting performance in the first half (48 percent) with a solid defensive effort, holding W&J to 33 percent from the floor (nine-of-27) to build up a 39-29 lead after the first 20 minutes of play. After giving up the first two points of the game, Waynesburg rebounded to out-score the Presidents 10-2 to grab a 10-4 advantage after four mints of play. The Yellow Jackets continued to play well over the first half, which included multiple leads of 15 points.
The visiting team didn't let up in the second half and extended its advantage to as many as 17 points (69-52) while maintaining double-digit leads for almost the entire 20-minute period.
Along with a satisfying victory for the team, the night was also a rewarding one for junior point guard
Ben Altmeyer. After missing all of last year and most of this season with injuries, Altmeyer not only made his first start in two years, but exploded for game highs in points (25), steals (two) and assists (three), while also ripping down a team-high five rebounds. The Pittsburgh native shot nine-of-14 from the floor, including six-for-eight from beyond three-point arc.
Senior guard
Larry Alexander and senior forward
Lou Galante chipped in 10 points apiece to the winning effort. Freshman forward
Jason Propst swatted away a game-high three shots.
The Jackets will need to carry their momentum from Wednesday's win into Saturday's trip to Greenville, Pa., when Waynesburg squares off with Thiel, the number-one team in the PAC. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
