WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 28) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team out-scored Geneva 52-42 from the field during Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) battle at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Unfortunately, the Golden Tornadoes knocked down 28 free throws to just six for the Yellow Jackets, as the visiting team picked up a 70-58 victory.
Waynesburg (4-16, 1-10) made more total field goals (22-to-20) and three-point tries (eight-to-two) than Geneva (5-14, 4-7), but it wasn't enough as the Tornadoes' attacking office resulted in 37 tries from the foul line, resulting in a 76 percent showing at the stripe. The Jackets connected on just six-of-11 attempts (54.5 percent).
After junior point guard
Ben Altmeyer scored the game's first two points on a lay-up, Geneva responded with seven-straight points to take a 7-2 lead. Waynesburg rebounded to make the game a one-basket contest for the remainder of the first half. A three-pointer by senior guard
Larry Alexander with 6:14 to go in the first half gave the Jackets a 20-17 lead. The two teams continued to battle down the stretch and a layup by freshman forward
Jason Propst with 24 seconds to go until halftime gave the Jackets a 27-26 edge after 20 minutes of play.
Once the second half got underway, Geneva posted five quick points to take a 31-27 advantage. The home team responded with a 7-2 run of its own to regain a one-point lead (34-33), but the Tornadoes responded with the next seven points, five of which came on free throws, to build up a 40-34 edge.
Geneva never trailed for the remainder of the game as they made 19-of-27 second-half foul shots to pull away from their hosts. Waynesburg, on the other hand, connected on just five-of-six attempts in the final period of play.
Though it came in a losing effort, Altmeyer racked up a team-high 15 points on five-of-11 shooting. Freshman forward
Jacob Fleegle chipped in 13 points on the afternoon, while Propst pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, including four offensive boards, off the bench. Both Alexander and senior point guard
Patrick Crawford tied for the game lead with three assists each.
Geneva featured four double-digit scorers, including Matt Lorello, who poured in a game-high 19 points. The Golden Tornadoes out-rebounded the Jackets 42-to-36
Waynesburg will look to snap out of a three-game losing streak in one week, when the Jackets play host to Saint Vincent on Saturday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
