LATROBE, Pa. (Jan. 4) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team led at halftime of its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with Saint Vincent on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets couldn't complete the upset as they fell 68-61 to the Bearcats.
Waynesburg (3-10, 0-4) opened up a 34-33 halftime advantage after leading by as many as seven points (14-7) in the early minutes of the contest. The Jackets built that slim edge up to a 41-36 lead after the first 2:10 of play in the second half. Unfortunately, the Bearcats (9-4, 2-2) responded with a 10-0 run to take a 46-41 advantage, a lead that they never relinquished.
The two major reasons for Saint Vincent's win were the home team's advantage at the free throw line (14-of-22 to Waynesburg's six-of-12) and in shooting percentage from the floor (46.3 percent to 35.9 percent). Despite giving up a considerable amount of height to their opponents, the Yellow Jackets held their own on the boards, matching the Bearcats in rebounding at 40 each. The teams were also dead even in turnovers with 14 each.
Waynesburg senior guard
Larry Alexander led his team's charge with a team-high 22 points on eight-of-14 shooting, including a four-for-seven effort from three-point range. Senior forward
Lou Galante chipped in 12 points off the bench, all from beyond the three-point arc, and junior center
Kurt Bonnet added 10 points.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, when the Jackets travel to Bethany to take on the Bison. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
