Women's hoops falls to #4 Mt. Union

After strong first half, Yellow Jackets drop 72-56 decision to Purple Raiders

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 24) – For the first 20 minutes of action, the defense of the Waynesburg University women's basketball team gave fourth-ranked Mount Union fits and had the Yellow Jackets in position to pull off a major upset. Unfortunately, the Purple Raiders found their offensive rhythm in the second half and turned a slim five-point halftime advantage into a 72-56 win on Saturday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The Jackets (1-3) came out hot and built up a 7-2 lead after 2:43 of play. Waynesburg expanded its advantage to 13-4 with 13:43 remaining in the first half, before the Purple Raiders (4-0) began slowly wearing away at the home team's advantage. With 3:26 to go until the halftime break, Mt. Union finally pulled even with Waynesburg at 19-19. A layup by freshman Gina Rievel gave Waynesburg the lead back at 21-19, but with 2:10 showing on the first-half clock, Mt. Union went on a 9-0 run that was finally halted by another Rievel layup with 18 seconds left in the period. When the two teams departed for their respective locker rooms, the Jackets were still very much in the game, trailing by just five at 28-23.

Unfortunately, the halftime break did little to slow Mt. Union's momentum, as the Raiders opened up the half with a quick 7-0 run that put them up 12 after just 1:06 of action in the second half. The visitors never looked back from that point on and built up leads as large as 22 points (70-48), before finishing off the victory.

Sophomore guard Hayden Giuliani led Waynesburg with a team-high 16 points. Senior guard Brittany Spencer added 11 points and a team-best six rebounds on the night, while senior guard Jessi Drayer came off the bench for eight points.

Mt. Union held a big advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Waynesburg 63-to-44 in the contest.

Waynesburg will try to bounce back on Wednesday, Nov. 28, when the Jackets open up Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a road trip to Bethany. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
