FREDERICK, Md. (Dec. 29) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team ended 2012 with a road game at Hood College. The Yellow Jackets got double-double efforts from senior guard Brittany Spencer and junior Elaine Hasek, but it wasn't enough as the visiting team fell to the Blazers 71-64.

After Hood (4-6) scored the first field goal of the game, Hasek connected on three-of-four free throw tries to put Waynesburg (3-8) ahead 3-2 after roughly two minutes of action. The lead was short-lived for the Jackets, who gave up a three-pointer to the home team that started a series of a combined eight ties and lead changes throughout the first 20 minutes of action.

With 9:54 showing on the first-half clock, Hood looked poised to pick up an easy victory over its opposition. Trailing 24-15, the Yellow Jackets fired back with an 11-2 run that was capped by a basket from Spencer that tied the game at 26-26 with six minutes to go until halftime. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Blazers were able to rebuild a six-point lead down the stretch run of the opening period and took a 37-31 lead into the halftime break.

Sophomore guard Hayden Giuliani cut Hood's lead in half with a three-pointer following 11 seconds of action in the second period. However, the home team fired back by scoring 12 of the next 17 points, all of which were scored by freshman Shakara Head, to put the Blazers up 49-39 with 17:18 remaining in the contest.

The Jackets were able to cut into the deficit as the final minutes wore on, but they could never get closer than four points to tying the matchup. Waynesburg was hampered by some cold shooting from the floor, hitting on just 28 percent of its shots (23-of-82). Hood, on the other hand, was successful on 44 percent of its tries from the field (24-of-55).

As previously mentioned, Spencer and Hasek led the charge for the Jackets, going for 16 and 14 points, respectively. Both players tied for the game high in rebounds with 11 each. Senior guard Jessi Drayer chipped in 11 points during the losing effort, while also dishing out a team-high four assists. Spencer and Giuliani tied for the game lead with three steals. Head went for a game-high 26 points on seven-of-10 shooting from the floor and a 12-for-13 showing at the free throw line. She added 11 rebounds in the win.

Waynesburg will look to snap out of its current three-game losing streak on Wednesday, Jan. 2, when the Jackets travel to Washington & Jefferson for an 8 p.m. Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
