BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Dec. 8) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team evened up its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) record and snapped out of a small two-game losing streak by scoring a 59-41 road win at Geneva on Saturday.
Things didn't start out well for the Yellow Jackets (3-5, 2-2), who trailed winless Geneva (0-8, 0-4) 25-20 at halftime, as both teams struggled from the floor during the low-scoring first half. Waynesburg made just eight field goals in 34 tries from the floor, including just two three-point attempts in 14 shots from downtown. However, things turned around in a big way during the final 20 minutes of action, as the visitors made 50 percent (13-of-26) of its field goals, including an impressive nine-of-12 attempts from long range.
After the Golden Tornadoes scored the first four points of the second period to go up by nine points, Waynesburg went on a 13-to-two run to take a 33-31 lead with 14:43 showing on the clock. After Geneva regained the lead with an old-fashioned three-point lead (34-33), the Yellow Jackets exploded for a 12-0 run to take a 45-34 advantage and grab firm control of the game for the first time.
After trimming the lead back to eight points (45-37), Geneva gave up another long Waynesburg run, this
one resulting in 11-straight Jacket points that put the game out of reach at 56-37 in favor of the visitors with just over a minute remaining in the contest.
With Waynesburg struggling in recent games to put the ball in the hoop, the Yellow Jackets got a welcome surprise off the bench in the form of freshman
Gina Rievel. The first-year guard poured in a game-high 17 points, which came on five made three-pointers in seven attempts and two converted free throws. Junior
Elaine Hasek led the visiting starters with eight points on three-of-five shooting.
The Jackets held a 43-to-33 advantage in rebounding, despite not having anyone with more than seven boards on the evening. Neither team did much damage at the foul line, as Waynesburg hit on six-of-10 attempts from the stripe, while Geneva made just five-of-nine free throws.
Waynesburg will step away from PAC play as the fall semester wraps up on campus. After finals week is completed on Friday, Dec. 14, the Jackets will return to the court for a road game at the College of Wooster on Saturday, Dec. 15. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
