Women's hoopsters pull away from Chatham in second half

Four Waynesburg players reach double digits in 71-52 PAC win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Feb. 1) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team held just a two-point lead after the first half of its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with Chatham on Wednesday night. However, the Yellow Jackets hit their stride in the second half and pulled away for a 71-52 victory.
 
After 20 minutes of action, Waynesburg (15-5, 10-3) was clinging to a 30-28 lead over the Cougars (3-17, 0-13). Following the halftime break, the game remained a tight contest over the first few minutes of the period. With the Jackets holding a 40-36 lead after five minutes of play, the Jackets were finally able to take control of the game by going on a 10-2 lead that expanded the visiting team's lead to 50-38 with 10:12 left to play.
 
After Chatham trimmed its deficit down to seven points (52-45), the Jackets fired back with a 12-0 run that put the visitors ahead 64-45 with 5:31 showing on the clock. Waynesburg increased its lead to 22 points on multiple occasions before closing out the win.
 
While Chatham held a 44-38 advantage in rebounding, the Jackets swiped 18 steals, to Chatham's three, committed just eight turnovers, to the Cougars' 31, and connected on 29 field goals, to their hosts' 18. Waynesburg also blocked eight shots, while Chatham swatted away just one.
 
Four different Jackets reached double digits in scoring. The quartet was led by junior Jessi Drayer, who poured in a team-high 16 points. Junior guard Brittany Spencer poured in 15 points to go along with five rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Junior forward Paige Pearce posted a double-double on 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds and senior point guard Hannah Hunter chipped in 11 points to go along with six assists, seven steals and six rebounds.
 
Waynesburg will go for its third-straight win on Saturday, Feb. 4, when the Jackets host Saint Vincent for an important PAC battle. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
