GROVY CITY, Pa. (Feb. 15) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team completed a two-game season sweep of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City with a 65-53 win on Wednesday night. The victory further cemented the Yellow Jackets' hold on third place in the PAC standings, as the team improved to 13-4 in conference action and 18-6 overall. The loss dropped the Wolverines to 6-11 in PAC play and 7-17 overall.
Waynesburg opened up a 9-4 lead after six minutes of play, but the advantage was short-lived, as the home team fired back to score eight unanswered points and grab a 12-9 edge with just over 12 minutes to play until halftime. The Jackets didn't seem bothered by playing from behind as they fired back with an impressive 14-0 run that gave the Orange and Black a 23-13 lead with 4:38 showing on the first-half clock,
The visitors weren't able to maintain a double-digit lead as the opening period wore down, but Waynesburg was able to take a 24-18 edge into the locker room. That lead continued to shrink once the second half got underway as Grove City out-scored its opposition 10-2 over the first two minutes of action to regain a two-point lead (28-26).
After slipping behind their hosts, the Yellow Jackets fired back with another long run, this time a 12-0 surge, to regain a 10-point lead (38-28) with 14 minutes left to play. The Jackets didn't allow the Wolverines to make another sizeable comeback and never led by fewer than six points for the remainder of the evening.
The Waynesburg offense was powered by four double-digit scorers, including a 15-point showing by junior guard
Brittany Spencer, which tied for the game lead. Junior forward
Paige Pearce chipped in a double-double effort with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while sophomore forward
Elaine Hasek and junior guard
Jessi Drayer tossed in 10 points each. Senior point guard
Hannah Hunter posted solid all-around numbers with eight points, a game-high four assists and seven rebounds. Freshman forward
Rachel Lovely added eight points in just 18 points off the bench.
Waynesburg's win stemmed from several team statistical advantages over the Wolverines. The Jackets held a slight 47-44 edge in rebounding and forced 20 turnovers, while yielding just nine of their own. The visitors also made 18-of-26 free throws, while Grove City knocked down just nine-of-14 attempts from the from the foul line.
The Jacket women will wrap up their regular season on Saturday, Feb. 18, when they host Washington & Jefferson for senior day. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
