Men's basketball season ends in Bethany

Yellow Jackets give the Bison plenty to handle, but fall 82-69

Box Score

BETHANY, W.Va. (Feb. 21) – The ninth-seeded Waynesburg University men's basketball team fought hard against the top-seeded team from Bethany during Tuesday night's quarterfinal game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament. The Yellow Jackets trailed by just six points at halftime and trailed by eight with 1:34 left to play before eventually falling to the Bison by the final score of 82-69.

The loss ends Waynesburg's season with a 5-22 overall record, while Bethany (23-3) advances to the semifinals, where the Bison will host seventh-seeded Washington & Jefferson, which upset second-seeded Thiel on Tuesday night.

Jacket forward Jacob Fleegle may have given the visiting fans a glimpse of a very successful future as he knocked down a three-pointer to open the scoring before tallying his team's first eight points of the night. A free throw by point guard Ben Altmeyer after roughly five minutes of play gave Waynesburg a 9-8 advantage, and the junior added to his team's advantage by nailing a three-pointer that put the underdogs ahead 12-8 with 14:23 left to play in the first half.

The Jackets continued to lead as the first half wore on and a pair of free throws by senior forward James Allenby gave them a six-point advantage (22-16) with 10:25 to go until halftime. The host team continued to trail for the next few minutes, but with just under seven minutes to play in the first period, a pair of Bethany free throws gave the Bison a 28-27 lead that they expanded to five points (32-27) on a pair of free throws and a field goal. The Jackets stopped the bleeding momentarily, but Bethany was able to put up two more field goals and take a 36-30 lead into halftime.

After play resumed after the break, the Bison scored the first six points of the second half to build up a 12-point advantage at 42-30. Waynesburg scratched and clawed its way through the second period, but could never regain the advantage it enjoyed in the first period. The Jackets cut the deficit down to as few as five points, but the Bison clinched the win with the final four points of the game.

Though it came in a losing effort, Fleegle poured in a season and team-high 17 points to lead the Waynesburg offense. Three other Waynesburg players reached double digits in scoring, including senior forward Lou Galante and freshman forward Jason Propst, who tossed in 12 points each in the loss. Altmeyer chipped in 11 points on the evening.

Waynesburg actually out-rebounded its opponents by a slim 31-to-29 margin and held a major advantage in three-point shooting (10-of-21 to 3-of-16). However, the Jackets' chances at victory were hurt by committing 23 turnovers and making just 11 free throws. Bethany turned the ball over just 12 times and knocked down 21 foul shots.
