Game 2 Box Score

LATROBE, Pa.(March 27) – The Waynesburg University baseball team led or was tied with Saint Vincent in the latter innings of both games of a seven-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Tuesday. Unfortunately, neither game ended in a win for the Yellow Jackets as the Bearcats came out on top by the final scores of 9-8 and 6-5 (nine innings).

Things didn't start well for Waynesburg (11-8, 2-3), which fell behind 8-0 after four innings of the opener, mostly because of a seven-run bottom of the fourth inning. However, the Yellow Jackets didn't quit and started a comeback with two runs in the top of the fifth, thanks in large part to a two-run single by junior first baseman
Bobby Hartman.

Still trailing 8-2, the Jacket bats caught fire in the sixth inning and tied the game up at 8-8 with a half-dozen tallies. Hartman drove in two more runs on a double and senior leftfielder
Nick Berdine picked up two RBI of his own with a single. Junior shortstop
Kyle Sasala and senior third baseman
Corey Goeggelman knocked in runs on a single and a double, respectively.

Unfortunately, all of Waynesburg's hard work at the plate was undone by a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth that put Saint Vincent (13-4, 3-2) ahead 9-8. Junior right fielder
Adam Horning singled in the seventh to try and start a Jacket comeback, but his pinch-runner, senior
Ken Rosenbauer, was unable to advance any further.

Senior
Rob Baumgartel started and took a no-decision after giving up eight runs over 3.2 innings pitched. Freshman
Sean Boyle came in from the bullpen and pitched well, giving up just two hits over 2.1 innings, with one of them being the game-deciding homerun.

Game two started in a similar fashion to the opener as Waynesburg fell behind 3-0 after four innings of work. Once again, the Yellow Jackets were able to take off on the comeback trail as they posted two runs in the top of the sixth that were brought in by an RBI single from Hartman and a run-scoring groundout by Berdine.

Waynesburg grabbed its first lead on the day in the top of the seventh with solo homeruns by Horning and Sasala that moved the Jackets head by the score of 4-3. The lead was short-lived, however, as an error by the home team led to the game-tying run for the Bearcats that sent the game into extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Jackets regained the edge in the ninth when Horning drove in his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, the visiting team couldn't hold the 5-4 advantage as a Jacket error played a role in the Bearcats not only tying the game, but walking off on a game-winning single to right-center field.

Junior
Anthony Longo started for the Jackets and took a no-decision after giving up three runs, all earned, on four hits and four walks during 3.1 innings of work. Senior
Tim Chilcote pitched the final two innings and suffered the loss.

Hartman led the Waynesburg offense by going four-for-eight with a double and a team-high five RBI over two games. Senior catcher
Brendan Scioscia also went .500 at the dish after collecting three hits in six at-bats. Scioscia also doubled and scored three runs.

The Jackets will try to shrug off the very disappointing defeats before returning to the road on Friday to face Bethany in a nine-inning PAC matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
