WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 31) – It was a satisfying day at the ball park for the Waynesburg University baseball team, which celebrated senior day by sweeping a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against Bethany at the Yellow Jackets' home park.

The Jackets (13-7, 4-4) had to come from behind to pull out both of the victories over the Bison (7-11, 4-7), the first of which was a 5-4 triumph that took eight innings to complete. Waynesburg picked up the late-game victory by the final score of 5-3.

With the game tied at 0-0 after three innings of play, Bethany finally got to Waynesburg starting pitcher Zach Kreke for four runs in the top of the fourth inning of the opener. Luckily for the home team, it was able to find its offensive rhythm in the bottom of the fifth inning and post three runs to cut the Bison's lead to 4-3.

After junior right fielder Adam Horning reached on a fielder's choice, he advanced to second on a single by senior catcher Noah Pust. Junior shortstop Kyle Sasala finally pushed Waynesburg's first run of the game across home plate with an RBI double that made the score 3-1 in favor of the visitors. The next batter, senior infielder Corey Goeggelman, made the score 4-2 with an RBI groundout. Sasala closed out the scoring by coming home on a wild pitch and pulling the Jackets to within just a single run (4-3).

The Jackets completed the comeback with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning that tied the score at 4-4. Senior leftfielder Nick Berdine drew a one-out walk and senior third baseman Tim Chilcote singled to move his classmate into scoring position. Senior centerfielder Mike Neckerman drove in Waynesburg's fourth run of the game with an RBI single up the middle that made the score 4-4 heading into the seventh inning.

After a scoreless seventh, Kreke kept the Bison off the scoreboard in the top of the eighth and gave his teammates a chance to pull out the extra-inning victory. Berdine led off the inning with a single and moved into scoring position on a balk. Pinch-hitter Andrew Rose laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Berdine over to third base. Two batters later, Horning smacked a walk-off single that allowed Berdine to score the game-winning run.

With the exception of the fourth inning, Kreke was magnificent on the mound for the Yellow Jackets. The sophomore tossed six perfect innings during the eight-inning complete game victory. He gave up just four hits, three of which came in the fourth, a walk and a hit batsman during the victory and struck out three.

Game two saw the Bison score two first-inning runs off Jacket starter Anthony Longo, but the damage could have been worse as the junior worked his way out of a tough situation that saw him load the bases with just one out on the board. That escape from further damage proved important as it allowed the home team to take the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Horning connected on his team-leading fourth homerun of the season. The three-run blast, which also scored Chilcote and Neckerman, gave Waynesburg a lead it never relinquished.

The Jackets increased their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Goeggelman singled in Pust, who was serving as the teams' designated hitter in game two. After Bethany cut Waynesburg's lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning, Pust singled in Horning to give the Jackets a valuable insurance run that brought about the final score of 5-3.

Longo picked up Waynesburg's second complete-game win of the day after scattering seven hits and two walks over seven innings of work. The righty struck out three Bison during the victory.

Pust, one of nine seniors honored on the day, led Waynesburg at the plate by going three-for-six at the dish with an RBI and two runs scored. Horning's four RBI paced the Jackets, while his three runs scored were also a team high.

The Jackets will look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday, April 3, when they play host to Saint Vincent for a nine-inning PAC showdown. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
